How it all started |
History
The Sustainable Futures Society was founded as a student consultancy project whose members carried out an audit of the school. Since then, we have evolved year after year. Recently, we made a shift to become more student-led and to be a means of empowering the student sustainability movement. Our mission is to a) manage the Sustainable Project Fund and b) promote environmental sustainability on campus. Sustainable Futures is set apart from other student societies because of its member-led approach to tackling sustainable issues on and around campus. Weekly meetings ensure that all members can take part in project management and implementation, and that all can contribute to the future direction of the projects. Environmental Leadership Group (ELG) The Sustainable Futures Society also have seats on LSE’s environmental policy committee, the Environmental Leadership Group (ELG). We are therefore in an excellent position to have a real and substantial influence in guiding the sustainability of the LSE through formal means, as well as through our ongoing campaigns and projects. Achievements To date, the Sustainable Futures Society has seen the introduction of Smart Mugs on campus, with the aim of reducing the amount of disposable take-away cups. Our Sustainable Projects Fund has helped fund student-led projects like the Plaza Cafe Green Roof as well as the beehives LSE maintains. We have also lobbied to ensure that all printers were set to print double-sided sheets as default! The Sustainable Projects Fund We administer the growing Sustainable Projects Fund, which collects money from the sale of single-use water bottles on campus. The fund aims to increase the engagement of LSE students and staff in making the campus more sustainable. Please see the Sustainable Projects Fund page for more information. |
