Co-operative Bicycle Maintenance

2012-2013 winner

LSE  bike maintenance

The project aims at enacting two bicycle maintenance co-operatives at the LSE. While cycling appears to be increasingly adopted here at the LSE, cycling maintenance on the other hand is something often left to cycle shops.

In partnership with the cycling society, a mere wall rack, small in size, that can encase some essential cycling maintenance tools in the bicycle storage will be set up at bicycle storages. By providing access to a range of relatively simple tools to students who may not otherwise have them, cycling maintenance can be administered personally. To help not only with the tools but also provide instructions, a handbook will be provided along with a notice board allowing for communication between those capable of fixing bicycle problems and those not.

This embeds sustainability in two forms at the LSE. Firstly, cycling competency and, hopefully as a result, cycling numbers will be increased, creating a more sustainable city. Secondly, the nature of the scheme is that future cycling societies can continue its legacy and future students can make use of it as they wish.
